Details:
Job Duties:
- help analyse sediment samples for bacteria, using the RWSL microscope; the student will be taught how to use the microscope, how to save images, and proper data collection techniques
- help in preparing microscope samples
- data entry of microscope findings into results database
- participate in other areas of research underway (e.g. molecular work of polychaetes or bacteria, attend workshops and meetings, methodology aspects etc…)
- communicate with Aisling to determine which campus they will be working at, or if they will be joining in fieldwork
- by the end of the work period, the student must create a Poster (~2’ x 2’) highlighting their accomplishments and how their work was part of the ‘big picture’ research project
- days when they do not have lab work to complete, or are not in the field, they will work in the library, or another work-space, to:
- read reports and project overviews pertaining to the NSERC IE Project
- read relevant articles selected by Aisling
- create summaries of their findings from the articles
Qualifications & Experience:
- must be an NIC student
- must be willing to work at both Comox Valley and Campbell River campuses
- must have completed first year major’s biology courses (Bio 102 and 103); enrollment in 2nd year science courses is preferred (either in the past or for the following year), as well as completion of first year chemistry (Che 110 and 111).
- must have strong attention to detail
- must be able to work independently and complete specifically stated goals
- must be willing to conduct fieldwork (potentially long days or overnight trips, and be comfortable on boats – all expenses will be covered, and pay will be extra for any overtime periods)
